Happiness: What Is It?

The word happiness is most often used in the psychological context of happy or healthy feelings ranging from blissful contentment to extreme joy or serenity. It is also used in conjunction with other words to indicate or imply happiness, such as well-Being, flourishing or well-being. According to some popular theories, happiness is a state of total well being. Happy people are said to be in touch with their inner values, experiences, and potentials. For those who are not happy, it is claimed, the results of their life experiences can turn their potentials into disaster, and they become unhappy because of this.

In the scientific study of happiness, however, the definition of this state varies considerably among different scientists and psychologists. Most agree on the fact that happiness is an emotion, as defined above. But some also add the idea that it is an evolved state of the mind that was created through evolution to help us deal with the day-to-day stresses of life. Happiness, then, can also be considered as an evolved emotion, one that can be positively influenced by conscious decisions made by people.

When you talk about the meaning of happiness, you talk about two different but interrelated things. On one hand, we talk about the positive aspects of this emotional state. Positive emotions or feelings are characterized by a state of happiness and contentment. People who are in positive emotions are said to have higher chances of living productive and meaningful lives. They have been found to do better at work, they enjoy and are more satisfied with their lives, and they have high levels of personal confidence.

On the other hand, there is the meaning of happiness that is associated with the cognitive processing of what is usually termed “meaning”. What means, according to this view, is being attached to a particular person or thing – an object, an event, or a concept. If a person attaches meaning to something, this person feels happy when he has that experience. He believes that he has achieved something once he has that object or event. The meaning of happiness then is linked to the particular meaning associated with that particular experience.

Research on the meaning of happiness has shown that those who are good at choosing and evaluating objects and events that can be used as models tend to have higher self-esteem and better self-beliefs. Those who are good at cognitively processing positive emotions tend to have higher self-esteem and better self-beliefs. Individuals who are happy are said to enjoy life more. They are physically healthier, they have higher energy levels, they sleep better, and they tend to be socially optimistic as well. When we talk about the meaning of happiness, these are just some of the positive emotions that come with a higher level of cognitive processing. These feelings and thoughts lead to a greater well-being and an increased well-speed of recovery from illnesses.

As a society, we should not only pay attention to the emotional content of what we are doing, but we must also pay attention to the meaning of happiness in our lives as well. Emotionally, happiness and the feelings and thoughts associated with it can provide tremendous healing power. People who are healthy and balanced emotionally have greater emotional intelligence, and they can use their emotions for positive purposes such as healing and happiness. In fact, research has shown that individuals who experience significant amounts of positive emotions such as happiness, love, peace, and wisdom have a greater chance of making wise decisions and having a successful life.
